We believe in the potential of every young person

Youth on Root provides wraparound support to youth from frontline environmental justice communities at every stage of their organizing journey. We’re flipping the narrative on who are the “experts” of the environmental and climate field.

MISSION AND VISION

Based in California, Youth on Root’s mission is to center low-income youth and youth of color as change agents in their communities by providing tools for learning from each other and opportunities to use their unique power to promote environmental justice. We envision a self-sustaining grassroots movement led by youth who have meaningful opportunities to enact their visions of environmental justice for their communities.

THEORY OF CHANGE

Youth on Root’s Theory of Change is that frontline youths’ lived experience with environmental racism is central to their EJ expertise, and by flooding the California Youth EJ Movement with wraparound support (education, direct resources, community of peers, statewide network), they will win the fight for EJ for their own communities while simultaneously shifting statewide policies through coalition.

By changing the narrative of who are the “experts” of EJ, the environmental field as a whole is ultimately led by those with the most lived experience and highest expertise to end the climate disaster: frontline youth.

The timeline highlights key milestones including the foundation by Candice Youngblood, youth advisory board formation, a summit, curriculum work, advocacy events, and youth participation in summits and retreats.
